Prenatal Care and Postpartum Recovery

Updated: Apr 10, 2023

Currently, Lindsey and I are at Franciscan Health in the Labor and Delivery Unit awaiting the birth of our second child! There are many key components that have helped guide our process through prenatal care and prepare for post-partum recovery. Every pregnancy event requires a team aimed at one goal: a healthy baby birthed as physiologically as possible.

The Team

Every mother-to-be needs a team on mission together to have the greatest birth outcomes. Members of this team include mother and father of the baby, OB/GYN, Midwife, Chiropractor (trained in pre-natal care), doula, massage therapist, nutritionist, pelvic floor trainer, nursing staff, and friends/family.

The Goal

The goal is to achieve a healthy pregnancy through full-term with the intention of a true physiologic birth that does not necessitate any interventions. BUT the goal is ultimately based upon what birth outcome MOM is wanting.

Where does Chiropractic fit?

The chiropractic adjustment plays a pivotal role in sympathetic/parasympathetic balance in the nervous system. Not only are adjustments helpful to control pain perception throughout the pregnancy and to help control through labor and delivery, the role of calming the central nervous system is important in allowing appropriate neurologic connectivity of the brain to reproductive organ systems as well as enabling appropriate hormonal drive through labor and delivery. Reduced stress and inflammation via the adjustment for baby in utero is very important as well to allow for as peaceful of an environment for baby prior to birth. Research has shown increased stress to baby in utero increases the risks for premature birth, improper infantile temperament, and diminished neurobehavioral development. This is why having baby born in a calm, peaceful, reduced stressed environment in pivotal for the greatest birth outcomes!

DELIVERED

Over the next few months we will be training, developing, and presenting on specific topics regarding pre-natal chiropractic care as well as pediatric chiropractic care. Many of our patients know we have been updated and expanding our facilities. The purpose of this growth is to help serve an important part of our communities that are very underserved with appropriate chiropractic care. Stay tuned for more information over the next few months!
