Babies!

Three questions that are commonly asked by parents: “Is Chiropractic safe for my child?”, “You can actually adjust kids?”, and “Will Chiropractic help my child?” The answer to these important questions is undoubtedly a resounding YES!

As many of you know, my wife and I were blessed with our first child, a beautiful baby girl, on May 30 of this year. During the process of labor and delivery, I was the supporting husband as my wife endured the most challenging physical feat any human being could participate in: childbirth. As Chiropractors we go through extensive training in school over all aspects of health. This includes OB/Gyn and Pediatric courses. Everything I learned while in school helped my wife to have a very safe and incredibly low-risk pregnancy leading to a healthy delivery of a very healthy baby girl.

The process of birthing a child is not rainbows and glitter though. It also is not equivalent to a horror movie. It is a beautiful moment and experience I wish all couples have the opportunity to share. There is pain, there is joy, there is pure love. There also tends to be an increased level of stress and neuromusculoskeletal strain on the body for mother and baby. This is why Chiropractic is pivotal shortly after birth to allow for appropriate spinal and neuro-developmental balance.

The trauma from birth can create abnormalities in an infants ability to latch, feed, digest, move, and function. This is why I adjusted my daughter at 4hrs and continue to adjust her every week since her birth. Initially, she did not latch appropriately at her first feeding because she was unable to comfortably position herself to begin breastfeeding. The cause of this dysfunction was the trauma of birth. I was able to have a front row seat (holding my wife’s left leg) of the process and saw the position and force used to help guide Emmersyn into our lives. I knew immediately she would have an issue with C1 on the left side with mild occipital posteriority due to the position she was pulled in by the delivering physician. He did a wonderful job during the process with us to prevent any major trauma to my wife and daughter both. Compared to many other deliveries, ours was incredibly simple with no complications and no invasive procedures were used, but there was still a pattern of Subluxation present leading to dysfunction. Following her adjustment she has been able to feed effectively, latch perfectly, and develop muscle control more appropriately. She also has a stronger immune system because of her adjustments.

Personally, I prefer to work with the younger population. Instead of trying to fix broken messes as adults, I can work on helping our youth begin to express life correctly and to the fullest. Overall, Chiropractic is a large piece to the puzzle of any child’s overall health. In addition a good pediatrician, good nutrition, and proper movement make an important impact. Unfortunately, most kids lack almost every one of these components to improve their overall health. Why is this the case? Education is a main reason why. This responsibility ultimately falls upon parents to fully educate themselves on different approaches they wish to take in order to have their children live a healthier life.

If you don’t have a Chiropractor on your kid’s health team, it may be time to look into it. Especially if your child suffers from chronic ear infections, sensory disorders, headaches, spinal pain, poor movement mechanics, digestive irregularities, and more. When you do, make sure you seek a Chiropractor who is comfortable treating children though or is certified through the ICPA. It will be the best investment you can make in the health of your children!
