Low Back Pain: Medicate or Active Treatment?

Updated: Apr 10, 2023

This post we will delve into the world of low back pain and what the current research indicates for treatment.  Let’s talk about low back pain and how it affects our society today.  Roughly 80% of our adult population has suffered from some form of low back pain in their lifetime. This can be due to may causes, but the underlying cause can always be attributed to some form of spinal dysfunction and SUBLUXATION leading to pain and loss of function.  Some attributes which can increase your risk for low back pain include: carrying excess weight, poor posture, injuries (trauma or repetitive stress), smoking, drinking alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, and more.  Hold on a second… that describes about 80% of the US population today so it makes sense as to why so many people suffer from low back pain.

Well then how in the world can this be treated?  Let’s break down the two models of treatment utilized, and you can guess as to which model reflects Chiropractic and which model reflects Medical.AllopathicHolisticTreat the symptoms described to them and examined after historyComplete an exam to find and treat the CAUSETreat with drugs and Surgery with possible negative side effects leading to more problemsActively treat through adjustments of the spine and associated extremitiesRecommend/Prescribe OTC medications and NSAIDs (Advil, Aleve, Tylenol, Bayer, etc)Actively treat through soft tissue therapies and modalitiesPrescribe medications (Anti-inflammatories, Muscle relaxers, and Narcotics/Opioids)Recommend a more active lifestyle to improve overall healthPerform surgery to either repair or replace a tissue or organAllow for the body to express full health and optimal functionEmergency and ResponsiveActive and Preventative

If you haven’t guessed by now, I’ll just spill the beans.  The medical approach is more appropriately reflected on the left allopathic model, while Chiropractic is reflected on the right Holistic model. Which one would you prefer to be treated with? Why does it matter anyways?

Well, I am thrilled to be sharing this information with you because FINALLY it has been proven that drugs are not effective and never will be in the treatment of low back pain.  The latest research indicates non-invasive care as being the optimal form of treatment to help low back pain.  This isn’t any kind of a new phenomenon though. This idea has been preached by the Chiropractic profession for over 100 years.  Active care which does not add or take anything away from our bodies has always been the most effective way to increase function.  This is why it matters which path you choose!  You can either choose patch work or active corrective care.

Think about it like this, your car breaks down, but can’t buy a new one. What do you do with it?  You call your mechanic, and they find the problem through some diagnostic work and fix it with tools and manual labor!  This is exactly how your body works also.  Active treatment for injury is the only way to actually fix the problem.  Taking drugs which only work to numb the pain is literally the same as putting a piece of tape over your check engine light. Your body and your car will give out on you completely in time to the point of no repair if you choose the tape route.  Good thing there are car manufacturers continually pumping out new vehicles to replace your old broken down car. Too bad this isn’t the case with our bodies or spine.  We only get one body and spine to spend our entire lives to abuse and wear down.  So why not treat our physical bodies with the respect and dignity we crave on a psychological, social, and mental level also?

So which model would you rather be treated with? One can actively FIX the problem while the other will mask it.  The choice is ultimately yours!
